On the way to Bethlehem

The bright star brightens the silent chilled night
Revealing the Magi in persistent search
Hope and anxiety kept their faces so bright
Their intended destination, sure to reach

All the way from East came they to adore
The world’s king in time and in eternity
The fulfillment of prophecies long ago
In the cradle; the incarnate humility

Abruptly the search was interrupted
A break for enquiry led to Herod
Who, at the news got intoxicated
Though his feelings he kept inward

His wrath on the Holy innocents befell
Against the incapacitated, his sword was raised
Mother Rachael! Mourn, weep and wail
Lamentation can get your heart – burdens eased

Welcome thee! Long expected Redeemer
Gain control over us and our world
be thou our Saviour and our Reformer
Receive our frankincense, myrrh and gold.
